The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

This moulding system has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians as an example, employed roto-molding methods in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mold readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration needed for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. One thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, generating a poor item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component within te mould has cooled successfully, the molder handling the process can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of exact items.
