The Roto-Molding Process Components

This moulding process has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, applied roto-molding systems in the of ceramics. 1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour desired for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
When the product within te mould has cooled adequately, the molder managing the process can then take out the finished product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, supplying a number of exact product lines.
