The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is essential at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the procedure can then take out the finished item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, making a series of similar items.
