The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

This molding operation has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, employed rotocasting procedures in the making of ceramics. The system has however taken very long to take affect because it was thought of to be a relatively slow process

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration chosen for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. The main thing that is important at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, making a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more step that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
When the material inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the process can then take out the finished item from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, supplying a series of exact products.
