The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, generating a weak item. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
When the material within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder taking care of the process can then extract the completed product from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of exact product lines.
