The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The offloading or de-moulding step.
When the product within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder taking care of the procedure can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical products.
